Policy Update - September 2022
Wednesday 14th of September 2022
It’s been a hectic summer in the policy world and your Tpas Policy Team has been busy ensuring that the views of our members and a strong Tenant Engagement focus is at the forefront of everyone’s thinking.
National Reports
We have made contributions to reports and policy papers in the following areas.
- Carbon neutral housebuilding
- Complaints monitoring
- Better Social Housing
- Estate Management
Campaigns
Tpas has been proud to join with Housing Sector colleagues such as the Chartered Institute of Housing and Placeshapers in calling on the new Prime Minister to provide urgent support to tenants facing the pressures of the cost-of-living crisis. We have also recently met with our friends at Shelter and are happy to support them on their ongoing action particularly their “lobby a lord” campaign arguing for additional powers in the Social Housing Regulation Bill which you can take part in here.
Consultations
We will be meeting with the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities later this month to share our thoughts on the governments rent cap consultation. The consultation closes on the 12th of October, and you can find out more about it here.
Scrutiny Club
The National Scrutiny Club met last week with nearly 50 people joining us during the course of the evening. The meeting discussed the regulation bill and amendments currently being considered in the house of lords and what is concerning tenants on the ground in the coming months. No surprises that the cost of living and how to survive the coming winter were top of the list. There will be a special cost of living Scrutiny Club taking place during Scrutiny Week open to tenant scrutineers and non-scrutineers alike. For more info and to register click here.
If you’re a tenant involved in Scrutiny work and want to come along to the next regular meeting of the group, you can sign up here.
