Tpas Response to the Government’s announcement on the Grenfell Report and Building Safety

Thursday 27th February 2025 –

The first responsibility of a landlord is to make sure that tenants’ homes are safe and in good repair. Therefore, we welcome the announcements from the government concerning the findings of the Grenfell enquiry and particular in relation to building safety.

Yesterday (26th February) the government has accepted the findings in the Grenfell Tower Inquiry’s final report and sets out its plans to act on all 58 recommendations.

Chair of Tpas Alison Inman said: " We are pleased to see that the government are strengthening tenant rights and backing that up with dedicated resources to empower tenant engagement. We hope that a strong regulator backed by legislation will ensure the basic right to be safe and secure in your home. Tpas believes this announcement is a positive step for both tenants and landlords. We must never again let tragedy lead us into action but instead we should be led by our dedication to working in partnership to provide safe and secure homes for all.”

These changes include stricter rules on construction product safety, a more robust regulator, and investigations into seven organizations named in the report.

The government's response includes the creation of a new construction regulator, stricter oversight of construction products, a legal duty of candour, and enhanced legal rights for residents. Social housing tenants will be empowered to report safety concerns and demand action.

About Tpas Ltd: Tpas is the leading tenant engagement organization in England, dedicated to championing effective tenant involvement and creating positive change within the social housing sector.
