This course offers practical tools and techniques to help improve your communication skills, be more assertive and develop effective questioning for meetings, research and challenge. It looks at a range of common scenarios: questioning and challenging reports and presentations in meetings; developing questions on performance reports; interviewing staff and residents in order to help and support them or to find out information for scrutiny and inspection.

- Explore the communication skills you need to be effective in your role
- Try out techniques and language for making points clearly
- Practice developing and asking the right questions
- Consider the different approaches you require for support, research and challenge
- Feel more confident to interpret and question reports and performance information
- Plan how to apply these skills in practice

This course is ideal for volunteers and staff who would like to develop their communication skills and be more effective in the type of questioning they carry out in their own role. It is helpful for scrutiny groups and resident panels or committees as well as individuals who wish to take part in group discussions and activities.
