The key areas that will be covered in this new training course will be:

Part 1 - The Theory

  • Purpose and key ingredients of good governance in public sector organisations
  • Primary governance responsibilities of local authorities
  • Role of statutory officers in supporting good governance in local authorities
  • 7 principles of Good Governance

Part 2 - Practical Application of the Theory

  • Exploring the 'professional partnership' that should exist between elected memmbers and senior officers to achieve effective oversight
  • Identifying and exploring examples of good practice, and challenges associated with achieving effective political oversight of performance
  • The 'conditions' required for effective performance oversight of housing portfolios

What will delegates learn?

  • Increase knowledge and understanding of good governance theory
  • Increase knowledge and understand about their role in providing politcal oversight of performance in housing departments and ALMOs
  • Understanding the nature of the professional partnership that needs to operate between elected members and senior officers
  • How elected members should approach their role in providing political oversight of performance
  • How elected members should target the focus of their performance oversight role and approaches for securing necessary assurance

  • Cabinet members/senior councillors with responsibility for overseeing the performance of local authority housing departments or ALMOs
  • Senior officers who work closely with cabinet members/senior councillors with responsibility for overseeing the performance of local authority housing departments or ALMOs

Important Information

The course will run from 10am until 12pm.

The price is plus VAT.


Cancellation Policy

All cancellations must be made in writing. If you cancel your place less than 7 working days before the training you will incur the full cost.

If you are unable to attend, you can send a substitute delegate at no extra cost.  All substitute delegates must be notified to Tpas in writing.

Once we have received your cancellation in writing we will forward you a confirmation of your cancellation detailing what you will be charged.

We aim to make sure that the training courses run as planned. However, there may be times when, due to circumstances beyond our control, we have to cancel the training. Should this be the case we will give you as much notice as possible. If you have already paid for the cancelled training we will give you a full refund. Should we run the training again, we will give you priority.
